The M4 MacBook Air, priced around $750 on Amazon, might just be the best budget laptop ever made.
But is it really that good?
To find out, I ordered the best Windows laptops under $750 and tested them side by side: the Microsoft Surface Laptop with Snapdragon X Plus, the Acer Aspire 14 with Intel Lunar Lake, and the Lenovo IdeaPad 16 with AMD Ryzen AI 7350.
I tested design, performance, thermals, battery life, sound, cameras, and real-world tasks.
The results were clear and surprising.
Design and Build Quality
Only the Surface Laptop and MacBook Air are built with aluminum.
The Acer and Lenovo are all plastic, feeling cheap and outdated.
The MacBook Air M4 easily wins with a full aluminum body, glass trackpad, thin bezels, and premium finish.
The Acer looks like a 2010 model, and the Lenovo feels more modern but still plastic.
Display
The MacBook Air M4’s display is far ahead of the competition.
It features a 2560x1664 resolution with about 85% more pixels, 500 nits of brightness, and excellent color accuracy.
The Acer and Lenovo have dim, washed-out displays, while the MacBook Air remains sharp and vibrant even under bright light.
Webcam and Audio
The MacBook Air’s Center Stage webcam delivers great image quality and face tracking.
The Surface Laptop comes second, with clear video and a good mic.
The Acer and Lenovo webcams are poor, with low contrast and muffled sound.
In audio, the MacBook Air and Surface are clearly better.
Apple’s sound is balanced with better bass, while Microsoft’s is louder but less detailed.
Acer and Lenovo sound flat and weak.
Performance
In CPU benchmarks, the MacBook Air M4 showed a huge advantage.
Even without a fan, it remained cool and stable.
It was roughly 40 to 55 percent faster in single-core and up to 40 percent faster in multicore compared to the others.
While the Acer and Lenovo had faster SSD read speeds, the M4’s total performance was unmatched.
Real-World Tests
In web browsing and design, the MacBook Air was up to 99 percent faster and tied with the Ryzen in Figma exports.
In Blender 3D rendering, the MacBook Air finished in 22 seconds, compared to 2 minutes and 39 seconds for AMD and 8 minutes for Intel.
That means the M4 chip was seven to eight times faster.
In Lightroom photo export, the MacBook Air finished in 54 seconds, followed by the Surface Laptop at 1:07, Lenovo at 1:37, and Acer at 2:31.
Another decisive victory for Apple.
Thermals and Noise
During stress tests, all three Windows laptops had their fans spinning loudly, while the fanless MacBook Air stayed silent and cool.
The Lenovo reached 57 degrees Celsius at the top of the keyboard.
The M4 chip managed heat extremely well, staying comfortable and consistent.
Battery Life
Despite having a brighter and higher-resolution screen, the MacBook Air finished the battery tests with 26 percent left, matching the Acer with Intel Lunar Lake.
The Surface ended with 19 percent, and the Lenovo died mid-test.
The efficiency of the M4 is clearly superior.
Conclusion
After all the tests, the result is undeniable.
Apple’s $750 M4 MacBook Air is the best budget laptop ever made.
It offers top performance, premium build quality, a superior display, long battery life, silent operation, and excellent resale value.
Windows laptops lose value faster and vary in quality, while MacBooks maintain performance, durability, and resale prices much better.
Final verdict: no Windows competitor — Intel, AMD, or Snapdragon — comes close.
Apple has completely dominated the budget laptop market.
